Coming to Australia once again, Static Revenger will be moving the minds and the bodies of the audience of the 2010 Winter Sound System, brought to us by Future Entertainment and going to get "exclusive on Melbourne's ass."
Fresh from a not-quite-run-of-the-mill interview with Kyle Sandilands in LA, Static Revenger (aka Dennis White) was still composing himself. Kyle, meant to be in Sydney organised an interview at a location that wasn't as expected. "He was in his pyjamas," while still at his house. Sporting a hot jeans and white shirt combo, the Static Revenger just rolled with it and got back to being excited about his next trip down under for a few gigs, some sleep and catching up with friends.
"I'm actually going to bring my good records this time," he joked "I normally play total shit but this time; a lot of exclusive mash-ups and I'm pretty stoked! (It will) be hit or miss, but genious."
Busy working at the moment with Crystal Method and LMFAO for a track to be titled 'Sine Language', being asked about artists other than Madonna was seemingly refreshing. "I always get asked about Madonna," he admitted, "it's great you only mention Crystal Method!" (In case you were wondering, I did ask about Madonna and no, her fashion 'style' has not rubbed off on Static Revenger, so sorry fans - no metallic pointy bras on stage.)
Coming down for speedy tour with Winter Sound, Static Revenger will be back in October / November to then kick back and see a bit more of the country. He was here a few years ago and after a childhood "totally preoccupied" with marsupials. One thing in the list back then was to see the Australian Platypus. "I thought they were 5 feet in size," (as a kid they would seem huge) "then this little 8 inch thing was swimming around. Cute as hell. I sat there and watched the duck billed Platypus - better than TV."
Next to Gods possible proof of a sense of humour, what makes Static Revenger the man that he is, is his love of culture. "One cool thing about the job and life that I lead is that I get to travel around and soak in a bit of culture." Being in such a position gave him the chance to start up an online travel show, Travel RIOT! "It started in Spain, where I was caught up in the Spanish festivals, centuries old. F**king awesome." Grabbed the opportunity for a little capital through a Car company, he was able to develop his methods and start making more documentaries about festivals. Getting deeper into the sub-cultures, seeing what was really underneath and finding more underground music and sound.
It's a little something that has made him love Australia and Melbourne - Melbourne has "turned the music world on its head," he said, "4 years ago it was 'oh, thats good' but in the last few years it's 'WTF!" The place has made all the producers around the world sit up and take notice. Making internationals work that little bit harder on their tunes. As a producer, Static Revenger is often blesses with the chance to check out the latest from labels before anyone else and expected to give feedback. Vandalism, for one got a response along these lines: "If Vandalism would stop being so f**king awesome - I would get more sleep." All the Aussie producers, Dirty South, TV Rock, "Those guys are amazing," in comparing with his own, "my track is not that good! GOD DAMN IT!!!"
The Aussie boys were recently in Miami for the Miami Music Conference although Static Revenger sadly didn't have the chance to catch up with them, "we are always stuck in meetings and gigs, you get into your own bubble." As for Miami itself; the bars, topless women, well, "all the stuff you might imagine is in Miami, is in there."
As for heading to Winter Sound, it won't be without a little time kicking back with another passion, documentaries or Fantastic Mr Fox. "I'm an animation junkie, that movie is genious. But if you can, see 'It Might Get Loud'" the 2009 release bringing together the likes of Jack White (The White Sripes), The Edge (U2) and Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) exploring the history of the electric guitar.
Here to maybe make more of his own films, you might not notice him scoping out the crowds with a camera. "I was shooting with a Canon HS10 camcorder, a little handheld," can be "a buzz kill having the small one," although more practical than walking around all day with something bigger. He was using "the 7D, it looks a lot better. Good for shooting music videos although needs a tripod, "but after a day it's just too heavy."
I'm very sure Australian audiences of Winter Sound System will be able to handle, whatever Static Revenger plans to throw at us.
